Morgan lifts 2 Grand Slams to move SHC past UWA Tigers, 14-12

LIVINGSTON, Ala. (March 16, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers baseball team used two Grand Slams by 1st baseman Micah Morgan to record a 14-12 non-conference victory over the University of West Alabama (UWA) Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Tartt Field.

SHC jumped out to an early lead over the Tigers (6-18) with a 6-run outburst in the 2nd inning that was highlighted by sophomore Morgan of Fairhope, Ala. first Grand Slam of the day.

UWA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of both the 2nd and 3rd innings to cut the Badger lead down to 6-4 and then added three in the 4th to assume a 7-6 advantage.

Spring Hill tied the game in the 5th inning off a 2-out infield throwing error that plated catcher Bryce Walker from 3rd base. Morgan then blasted his second Grand Slam out of left-center to re-stake the Badgers to an 11-7 cushion.

The Badgers benefited from another run off a Tiger error in the top of the 7th inning to make it 12-7. Walker would punch in two more Badger runs with a one-out double in the 8th frame.

West Alabama rallied for three runs in the 8th inning to make it 14-10 and knocked a 2-run homer with one out in the 9th inning to make the final inning interesting, but Morgan moved from 1st base to the mound to record the final two outs with a strikeout and a fly ball to left field.

Six Badger pitchers allowed 15 hits and seven walks with seven strikeouts as Colin Millar (2-3) took the win in 1.1 innings of relief with four hits allowed.

The Tigers also sent six pitchers to the mound as Devin Sisson (0-1) accepted the loss in two-thirds of an inning with two hits and two walks.

SHC totaled six hits with nine walks and seven strikeouts on the afternoon, as Morgan was 3-for-5 with eight RBI and center fielder Gage Ragona reached base for the 18th consecutive game, registering three walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored.

The Badgers (10-8; 3-3 SIAC West) will next travel to Albany, Ga., to play a 3-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series against the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams (11-4; 10-1 SIAC East) with a 6 p.m. (east) single game on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (east) at ASU West Campus Stadium.
