LIVINGSTON, Ala. (March 16, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers baseball team used two Grand Slams by 1
st baseman
Micah Morgan to record a 14-12 non-conference victory over the University of West Alabama (UWA) Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Tartt Field.
SHC jumped out to an early lead over the Tigers (6-18) with a 6-run outburst in the 2
nd inning that was highlighted by sophomore Morgan of Fairhope, Ala. first Grand Slam of the day.
UWA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of both the 2
nd and 3
rd innings to cut the Badger lead down to 6-4 and then added three in the 4
th to assume a 7-6 advantage.
Spring Hill tied the game in the 5
th inning off a 2-out infield throwing error that plated catcher
Bryce Walker from 3
rd base. Morgan then blasted his second Grand Slam out of left-center to re-stake the Badgers to an 11-7 cushion.
The Badgers benefited from another run off a Tiger error in the top of the 7
th inning to make it 12-7. Walker would punch in two more Badger runs with a one-out double in the 8
th frame.
West Alabama rallied for three runs in the 8
th inning to make it 14-10 and knocked a 2-run homer with one out in the 9
th inning to make the final inning interesting, but Morgan moved from 1
st base to the mound to record the final two outs with a strikeout and a fly ball to left field.
Six Badger pitchers allowed 15 hits and seven walks with seven strikeouts as
Colin Millar (2-3) took the win in 1.1 innings of relief with four hits allowed.
The Tigers also sent six pitchers to the mound as Devin Sisson (0-1) accepted the loss in two-thirds of an inning with two hits and two walks.
SHC totaled six hits with nine walks and seven strikeouts on the afternoon, as Morgan was 3-for-5 with eight RBI and center fielder
Gage Ragona reached base for the 18
th consecutive game, registering three walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
The Badgers (10-8; 3-3 SIAC West) will next travel to Albany, Ga., to play a 3-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series against the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams (11-4; 10-1 SIAC East) with a 6 p.m. (east) single game on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (east) at ASU West Campus Stadium.
