Badgers splash past Eagles, 3-0

MOBILE, Ala. (September 6, 2021) – The Spring Hill College men's soccer team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a convincing 3-0 non-conference victory over the Faulkner University Eagles on a wet Monday afternoon at Library Field.

SHC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Albert Vila Truco scored with a header off a corner kick from Diogo Sousa. A sudden downpour with lightning then delayed the contest in the 31st minute for over an hour, drenching Library Field.

When the teams returned to action, another corner by Sousa resulted in a second Badger goal in the 40th minute, but this time off the head of Antoine Marques of the Eagles who saw his clearing attempt sail backward instead of forward.

The Badgers iced the game in the 48th minute as Carlos Fernandes ripped in a score off senior Matthew Moreno's second assist of the year.

From there, SHC began to work in the reserves as 18 Badgers saw action on the day.

Badger head coach Chris Leonardi was pleased with his team's total effort. "We didn't let down today and we controlled the action throughout the game," he said following the game. "I was glad to see that the weather delay did not affect our concentration and focus. That's the nature of where we play so we have to be able to deal with it. We kept the same intensity throughout, so I'm proud of that."

SHC keeper Alessandro Erdelyi (2-0) earned the win without having to make a save in 74 minutes while Fabian Keiblinger finished the final 16 minutes also without a save as the SHC defense limited the Eagles to (0-5) to just three shot attempts and one corner kick.

Nic Fischer of Faulkner made eight saves against a barrage of 22 SHC shots and 8 corner kicks.

The Badgers will next travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. on Friday to face the Eckerd College Tritons (0-2) in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m. (East) on Johnson Field. "We step up our level of competition this weekend," Leonardi said. "The Sunshine Conference is one of the best in the nation, but we are looking forward to our first road trip of the year."
