Mid-game surge lifts UWG past Badgers, 3-0

CARROLLTON, Ga. (September 24, 2021) – Two goals by the University of West Georgia (UWG) Wolves sandwiched around the halftime intermission resulted in a 3-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss for the Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers women's soccer team at University Field on Friday evening.

The Wolves (3-1, 1-0 GSC) shook past a determined Badger squad in the 41st minute when freshman Janet Hartman found pay dirt off an assist sequence from Cassidi Thomas and Lauren O'Neill. Freshman Jayden Boswell later made it 2-0 in favor of the home team with an unassisted tally five minutes into the second period.

Freshman Kaylah Nicholas cleaned up a saved shot attempt off the foot of Hartman in the 79th minute for the third Wolf goal of the night.

Badger starting keeper Anna Brunner (0-7) made eight saves against 29 shots and 11 corner kicks by UWG. Abbie Chaves of the Wolves had two saves versus seven Badger shots and one corner attempt in the first half while Haley Brinkman played the second period with no saves against no shot nor corner attempts.

Following the contest SHC head coach Emily Marcouiller stated, "We played a fantastic first half. We really had them pinned in. I was super proud of the first half. It's a little disappointing that we didn't bring that same energy to the second half and the goals we gave up were our mistakes for not being tuned in completely. We take away the positives and go again Sunday."

The Badgers (0-7; 0-3 GSC) will now travel to Valdosta, Ga. to face the Valdosta State University (VSU) Blazers (3-1; 0-0 GSC) at the VSU Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m. (eastern)
