Badgers rebound for 4-0 win over Chargers

MOBILE, Ala. (September 19, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team rebounded from a two-match losing skid to earn a convincing 4-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers on Sunday evening at Library Field.

Perhaps due to a 30-minute lightning delay just 4 minutes into play, the first half was a midfield battle as both teams scrambled to find advantages over the opposing defenses. The Badgers would finally break on top 1-0 in the 30th minute as Albert Vila Truco's header found a window for a goal off a corner-kick assist from Joao Amaral on the right side.

SHC put two back-breakers on the board against the Chargers (1-2-1; 0-1 GSC) in the 66th and 67th minutes when Luca Carrese drove home a breakaway one-on-one goal with a midfield assist from Carlos Fernandes that was followed just 38 seconds later by a Matthew Moreno goal off an assist by Diogo Sousa.

Amaral would add the icing on the cake in the 82nd minute when Moreno found him on the run with a perfectly placed cross-field pass from the left sideline.

SHC keeper Alessandro Erdelyi (4-2) had four saves versus 12 shots and 10 corners by the Chargers while Ethan Haworth of UAH made one save versus nine shots and three corners by the Badgers.

After the match, SHC head coach Chris Leonardi commented, "We're very happy and proud of the way the boys bounce back after Friday night's game [a 2-0 loss at West Alabama]. Today, with the effort came the execution on all four lines. We have quality on our roster and today it was on display."

The Badgers (4-2; 1-1 GSC) will step out of conference play on Wednesday to host the Thomas University Night Hawks (3-1) on Library Field beginning at 2 p.m. in a match rescheduled from earlier this year due to Hurricane Ida.
