Badgers close books on 2021 with 80-70 win at Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team finished the 2021 season on Sunday afternoon with an 80-70 road win over the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams in The Arena at West Campus.

Spring Hill held a 43-37 lead over the Golden Rams (3-8) at the halftime intermission and built as much as a 10-point advantage early in the 2nd half, but ASU roared back to tie the game at 64-64 with 6:45 left on the clock.

A David Daniels layup at 3:43 was followed up with a dunk by the sophomore forward from Homer Glen, Ill. at 3:15 as SHC clawed back out to a 74-65 cushion with 2 minutes remaining.

Malik Parker of ASU drained a 3-pointer at 1:35 to pull the Rams within 6 points and keep the issue in doubt. Jordan Simpson of the Rams then made it just a 74-70 SHC lead with a layup at 1:20, but SHC's Christian Scott sank four consecutive free throws at 1:14 and at 31 seconds to keep the Badgers in the driver's seat.

Daniels led the Badgers with 22 points and 8 rebounds while Beril Kabamba contributed 16 to the scorecard and Maurice McCullum poured 12 points through the hoops.

SHC shot 47.5% (28-59) from the field and 26.7% (4-15) from 3-point range while knocking down 76.9% (20-26) of their free throws. The Badger earned a 39-35 edge in rebounding, but lost 15 turnovers to 10 steals by the Rams.

For ASU, Jordan Simpson scored 20 points with 8 rebounds to lead four Rams into double-digits in scoring. The Rams shot 42.2% (27-64) overall, including 28.6% (6-21) from 3-point distance. Albany State was 66.7% (6-21) on their free throw attempts and lost 17 turnover to 11 steals by SHC.

The Badgers finish the pandemic-shortened 2021 season with a 3-7 overall record.
