ALBANY, Ga. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team used a 27-11 run in the third quarter to steal a 63-56 victory away from the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams on Friday evening at the Arena at West Campus.
The Golden Rams edged out to a 14-12 advantage by the end of the 1
st quarter and ran off a 6-0 string to open the 2
nd quarter before guard
Tyashia Bostick of the Badgers stopped the bleeding with 3-point bucket with 6 minutes until halftime.
By the intermission, ASU had raced out to 30-17 cushion, but the Badgers erupted for a 27-11 run in the 3
rd quarter to wrest back a 44-41 lead with 10 minutes to play. SHC had found its way into the inside of the ASU defense and began to drop in layup after layup, taking a 53-41 edge by the 7:46 mark of the 4
th quarter.
With 2:44 remaining, ASU had sliced the Badger advantage down to 57-50 off back-to-back 3-pointers by Chelsea Hill and Passion Thomas, but a layup from Bostick made it 59-50 with 2 minutes left on the clock.
Bostick paced the Badgers with 23 points while
Ariel Thompson and
Lindi DeBilzan added 12 points each. Thompson pulled in 9 rebounds. SHC shot 46.3% (25-54) from the floor and 26.9% (7-26) from 3-point distance. The Badgers hurt themselves by shooting just 54.5% (6-11) from the foul line and committing 23 turnovers against 10 steals by ASU, but they out-rebounded the Rams 37-35.
Hill and Kierra York led the Rams with 14 points each as ASU shot 36.7% (22-60) from the field and just 11.5% (3-26) from 3-point range. The Rams shot 64.3% (9-14) from the free throw line and lost 18 turnovers to 10 steals by the Badgers.
The Badgers (2-5) will close out their Covid-shortened 2021 schedule on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. (eastern) contest versus the Golden Rams (0-13) at the Arena at West Campus.
