MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team opened regular season play on Saturday afternoon with an 86-76 non-conference home loss to defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division champions Miles College Golden Bears at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The Golden Bears (1-0) and the Badgers were knotted at 37-37 at intermission, but an early second-half run put SHC in a hole from which it could not claw out.
Freshman forward
Beril Kabamba of Clearwater, Fla. paced SHC with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Badgers shot 43.9% (29-66) from the field and 33.3% (6-18) from 3-point range. Spring Hill committed just 9 turnovers against 3 steals by the Bears, but were out-rebounded 40-38. At the free throw line, the Badgers were 63.2% (12-19).
David Daniels added 14 points to the SHC scoreboard from his guard spot.
Guard Avery Brown had 27 points off an 8-16 shooting performance as the Bears shot 46.9% (30-64) overall, including 14.3% (2-14) from 3-point distance. Miles lost 6 turnovers to 3 steals by the Badgers and completed 85.7% (24-28) of their free throw opportunities.
The Badgers (0-1) and the Bears will closeout this two-game non-conference set on Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. contest in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
