Badgers broil Lady Rams, 76-70

MOBILE, Ala. (December 4, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team earned an exciting 76-70 non-conference victory over crosstown rivals the University of Mobile Lady Rams on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

The Lady Rams (6-3) built out a 5-point lead just four minutes into play, but the Badgers rallied to take a 31-29 lead into the halftime locker rooms.

SHC would run out to a 56-44 cushion early in the 4th quarter, but the Rams found their way back into the contest, using a layup from Artasia McDowell to tie the game at 61-61 with 4:18 on the clock and taking back the lead off a Breannah McCullah layup at 65-64 with 2:06 remaining.

Tyashia Bostick of the Badgers answered right back with a layup of her own at 1:35 to hand the advantage back to SHC. Mobile would miss two free throws on the other end and Bostick popped a 3-pointer to ignite the home crowd at 1:03.

The Badgers would miss the backend of consecutive 2-shot trips to the free throw line with under 30 seconds left, but on each occasion they came down with a crucial offensive rebound. The second resulting in a backbreaking put-back layup from center Ariel Thompson to make it a 74-67 bulge with just 19 seconds showing.

Mobile's full court pressure resulted in a late free throw and layup for the team from 11 miles up the Interstate, but two free throws by Badger guard Zareia Ector with two seconds left salted away the final outcome.

SHC shot 51.8% (29-56) from the floor and 36.4% (4-11) from 3-point range, but lost 26 turnovers to 15 steals by the Rams. Bostick had 22 points, Thompson and Brandy Lee each added 12 points. Lee handed out five assists and Thompson brought in six rebounds.

For Mobile, the Rams shot 44.8% (30-67) from the field and 15.8% from 3-point distance. The Rams won the rebounding battle 39-34, but lost 25 turnovers to 10 Badger steals. McDowell had 14 points, Erica Jones put in 13 points and McCullah joined in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Badgers (2-6, 0-1 SIAC West) will now take a week off for final exams before hosting Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams (1-6; 0-0 SIAC East) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 11 in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
