PENSACOLA, Fla. (November 21, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team suffered a 57-43 non-conference road loss to the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts at the UWF Field House on Sunday evening.
The Argonauts (3-1) and the Badgers both struggled offensively in the early going with the score standing at just 2-2 at the 5:37 mark of the 1
st quarter. UWF finally broke the ice with a layup that SHC answered with a lay in of their own as the teams began to shake off the rust.
UWF then warmed up quickly taking a 12-4 lead, but Tyashia Bostic of the Badgers responded with a 3-pointer from the right side and
Paige Taylor put in a layup from the left side of the basket to make it a 15-9 UWF lead after the 1
st quarter of play.
The 2
nd period saw SHC drop in a 3-pointer to make the deficit 18-12 with 7:19 to go in the half, but UWF would stretch it back out to 24-14 by the 4:53 media timeout. Out of the timeout, Bostick drove home another 3-pointer for the ladies in purple, but the Argos found a 3-point response on the other end less than a minute later.
Ariel Thompson's layup at 3:15 was answered by a copycat move by the Argos at 2:52 as the Argos kept finding ways to keep the Badgers at arm's length. A Thompson put back of a missed shot was followed by a misplayed Argo inbounds that led to another lay in by Thompson as the teams went to locker rooms with UWF leading 30-24.
Once again, both teams were slow to answer the call to open the 3
rd quarter as UWF found a lone field goal to make it 32-24 four minutes into play, but SHC's
Zariel Jordan got behind the defense to make it 32-26 at 5:43. A 7-2 run by the Argos made it a 39-28 game by the 2-minute mark of the 3
rd quarter and UWF would carry a 41-28 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Bostick had 14 points for the Badgers while Thompson added another 14 points and seven rebounds. Zoe Piller of UWF had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Maddie Griffon contributed 13 points and Jaclyn Jarnot had 11 points with 13 rebounds.
SHC shot 38.6% (17-44) from the floor and 31.3% (5-16) from 3-point distance, but lost 21 turnovers to 10 UWF steals that resulted in 17 points-off-turnovers for the home team.
UWF made 40% (22-55) of their shots including 16.7% (3-18) from 3-point range while out-rebounding the Badgers 40-30 for a 14-4 advantage in second chance points.
Spring Hill and the Argos will meet again this season in Mobile, Ala. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
