Lady Badgers stumble at Central State, 72-63

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team lost a 72-63 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) decision versus the Central State University (CSU) Lady Marauders at Beacom/Lewis Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Marauders (10-13, 6-7 SIAC West) built out a 21-15 lead after the 1st quarter and held a 39-28 advantage at halftime. SHC whittled the deficit down to 55-53 early in the 4th quarter, but would draw no closer as CSU reclaimed a 68-59 bulge with less than 4 minutes remaining.

Senior forward Tiffany Valentine of Houston, Texas led the Badgers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Daja Walker added 14 points and junior Katie Krout scored 10 points with seven rebounds.

As a team, the Badgers shot 42.6% (23-54) from the floor, but just 16.7% (2-12) from beyond 3-point distance. SHC lost the ball 28 times against 14 steals by the Marauder defense that CSU converted into a 29-8 advantage in points off turnovers. The Badgers knocked down 68.2% (15-22) of their free throw opportunities and controlled the boards by a 45-37 margin.

Takyra Gilbert paced the Marauders with 21 points as CSU shot 36.1% (26-72) from the field for the second consecutive game against SHC and 31.6% (6-19) from 3-point range. CSU scored on 82.4% (14-17) of its free throws and lost 16 turnovers to five Badger steals.

The Badgers (8-14, 7-6 SIAC West) next travel to Frankfort, Ky. on Monday to face the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobrettes (6-14, 3-10 SIAC West) in the William Exum Center at 5:30 p.m. (east).
