MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team closed out the 2019-20 regular season with an 83-79 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) loss to the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on Tuesday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
SHC trailed for the first 78 minutes and by as much as 15 points with 4:15 left in the first half, but a free throw by senior forward
Chase Shellman put the Badgers up 77-76 with two minutes to play. Tuskegee would regain the lead 15 seconds later off two free throws of their own and Thomas Myles of the Golden Tigers drove home the final nail with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 25 seconds showing to give the visitors an 83-77 advantage.
Shellman scored 31 points for the Badgers while fellow senior guard
Gresyn Rogers added 21 and sophomore guard
Christian Brandt punched home 12 points.
As a team, SHC shot 50% (29-58) from the field and 43.5% (10-23) from 3-point range. The Badgers lost 10 turnovers against six steals by the Tigers. The Badgers led 30-23 in rebounding and were successful on 73.3% (11-15) of their free throws.
James Eads led Tuskegee with 24 points as four Tigers reached double digits in scoring. Tuskegee shot 56.9% (29-51) overall and made 57.1% (16-28) of their shots from beyond the arc. Tuskegee committed nine turnovers against four steals by the Badger defense. The Golden Tigers (17-9, 14-5 SIAC West) made 81.8% (9-11) of their free throw opportunities on the night.
The Badgers (8-20, 7-12 SIAC West) will now wait to discover their first-round opponent in the 2020 SIAC Championship Tournament held at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center in Rock Hill, S.C. on March 2-7.
