ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team closed out the 2019-20 season with a 79-66 loss to the Savannah State University (SSU) Tigers on Monday afternoon in the opening round of the 2020 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship Tournament in the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center.
The Tigers (11-12) took a 7-5 lead at 16:29 mark of the first half of play and never again trailed the Badgers, building out as much as 15-point lead late in the second period of play.
Senior forward
Chase Shellman scored 18 points with 12 rebounds in his final game in purple and white while fellow senior guard
Gresyn Rogers added 13, junior guard
Ron Rice pumped in 11, and senior guard
Dwight Harris contributed 10 points.
As a team, SHC shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field and 20% (3-15) from 3-point range. The Badgers suffered 13 turnovers against eight steals by the Tigers. The Badgers led 35-34 in rebounding and were successful on 76% (19-25) of their free throws.
Marcus Scott led SSU with 23 points as the Tigers shot 45.3% (24-53) overall and made 31.8% (7-22) of their shots from beyond the arc. SSU committed nine turnovers against six steals by the Badger defense. The Tigers made 70.6% (24-34) of their free throw opportunities on the day.
The Badgers finished the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 8-21 and stood 5
th in the 7-team SIAC West Division at 7-12 in conference play.
