Two goals in five minutes doom Badger women in opener
MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team surrendered two goals in less than five minutes in the second half on Friday afternoon to suffer a season-opening 3-0 non-conference loss to the Newberry College Wolves at Library Field.
 
The Badgers and the Wolves (1-0) played a defense-dominated first half as the two teams went to the sidelines tied nil-nil at intermission. SHC limited the Wolves to no shots in the first 45 minutes, but allowed 12 shots over the second 45-minute frame.
 
Daphne Heyaime of the Wolves broke the ice with a goal off an assist from Chavez in the 57th minute by drawing out SHC keeper sophomore Kira Babiarz before finding the net. Taylor Hiatt then added a second goal off an entry from Salley Slice just over four minutes later in the 62nd minute.
 
Newberry's Emma Silva tacked on a third goal in the 77th minute with an assist from Heyaime as she settled a loose ball in front of an open net and chested it in.
 
Babiarz (0-1) faced 12 shots and three corner kicks by the Wolves with five saves while her starting counterpart Delany Hood of Newberry made two saves versus five Badger shots before yielding to Jayleen Gant (1-0) who delivered two saves versus three shots. Together, the duo warded off with four corner attempts by SHC.
 
The Badgers (0-1) will next host the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams in a non-conference match at Library Field on Sunday at 3 p.m.
