Badgers fall to Union in overtime, 1-0
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team opened the 2019 Gulf South Conference (GSC) portion of its schedule with a 1-0 overtime loss to the Union University Bulldogs at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1 GSC) and the Badgers battled to a scoreless tie in the first period as midfield play and defense dominated the opening 45 minutes of the match.  Spring Hill managed to get off six shots in the first half while Union launched just four attempts at the net.

In the second period, both offenses picked up the pressure, but the opposing goalkeepers continued to shine by fending off several scoring opportunities and sending the game into overtime still knotted nil-nil.

Gavin Scott of Union would end the match in the 97th minute when he found an opening in the goal's lower right corner after an assist by Mats Fredriksen.

"Tonight we created enough chances to get something out of the game," SHC head coach Steve Wieczorek said after the game. "Still, take nothing away from Union because, in the end, they did what needed to be done to get the win. We need to dig in, find ourselves a bit, and go again on Sunday."

SHC sophomore goalkeeper Alessandro Erdelyi (1-3) from Turin, Italy, made five saves against nine shots with six corner kicks by the Bulldogs while Euan Morton of Union collected 12 saves versus 19 shots and seven corner attempts by the Badgers.

The Badgers (2-3, 0-1 GSC) next travel to Memphis on Sunday to face the Buccaneers (2-4, 0-1 GSC) of Christian Brothers University (CBU) at Signaigo Field in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
