Lions maul Badgers in 4-1 decision
MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team fell in a 4-1 non-conference decision to the Saint Leo University Lions on Friday afternoon at Library Field.
 
Adriana Tirado put the Lions (3-1-1) on the board early with a shot that found the net in the 7th minute. The 1-0 lead for the visitors from Florida held up through the intermission, but would expand to 2-0 when a header by Sydney Chase earned purchase in the 50th minute.
 
Saint Leo made it a 3-0 advantage in the 77th minute as Carolina Solis-Deleon scored off an assist from Kennedy Messina. Sydney Chase of Saint Leo would tack on a fourth goal in the 86th minute with an assisting pass by Rebecca Anderson.
 
SHC sophomore Libby Durrough of Hebron, Ky., prevented the shutout with her first tally of the year with less than 90 seconds left on the clock.
 
Making her first start of the season for the Badgers, sophomore keeper Grace Riley (0-1) of Covington, La., faced 17 shots and six corner kicks by Saint Leo while making four saves. Her counterpart on the opposite end of the field, Julia Ortiz of the Lions (3-1-1), made one save versus four shots in 63 minutes of action. Alyssa Abernot finished out the contest for the Lions and faced just the one shot on-goal and three shots in total with no saves. SHC did not attempt a corner kick.
 
The Badgers (1-3) will open Gulf South Conference (GSC) competition on Friday, September 27, at the Union University Bulldogs (1-1) in Jackson, Tenn., at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
