MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Spring Hill College saw its 10-match winning streak come to a close Sunday, as the Badgers fell, 4-0, at Division I member Alabama State.
Alabama State (10-9) - which finished its regular season a perfect 6-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference - took two of the three doubles matches to secure the team point, as Alexis Collard and Jon Efrim beat
Cedric Nitz and
Kurt Shiell, 6-2, at No. 1 andd Chris Andre and Juan Rodriguez got by Alex Demel and
Til Behrendt, 7-5, at No. 2. The loss by Nitz and Shiell snapped a nine-match winning streak for the duo.
In the singles matches, Efrim beat Nitz, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Tomas Fernandez knocked off Demel, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Rodriguez beat
Chris Mines, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 to secure the win for the Hornets. Mines' loss stopped a five-match winning streak for the sophomore from Birmingham.
Spring Hill (15-8) is back in action Friday, closing out the regular season against the University of Mobile at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships will be April 15-16 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga.
