Spring Hill's five-game win streak came to an end Wednesday afternoon in Clinton, Miss., as Mississippi College earned a doubleheader sweep, 5-2 and 2-0, in softball action.
Game One: Mississippi College 5, Spring Hill 2
After the Badgers rallied to tie, MC used three runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead for the victory.
Mississippi College scored a pair of unearned runs in the first to take the lead. In the second, the Badgers cut the lead in half.
Carlisle Jamison singled to center, then moved up to second on a ground out.
Daniella Amador would then send an RBI single into center, plating Jamison to make it 2-1.
In the fourth, the Badgers knotted up the score.
Aly Fowler walked with one out, then was lifted for pinch runner
Randa Day. Jamison singled down the line in left to put the tying run in scoring position. After a strike out, Amador reached on a fielding error by MC, allowing Day to score to tie the game, 2-2.
SHC would load the bases in the fifth, but couldn't score a go-ahead run. In the home half of the sixth, a pair of doubles to start the inning gave the Lady Choctaws the lead. Another double stretched the lead to two, with a wild pitch and a passed ball giving MC the 5-2 lead. A throwing error would give SHC a runner in the seventh, but that would be as close as the Badgers would get.
Olivia Brown (3-4) allowed just two earned runs in five innings of work in the circle, taking the loss.
Game Two: Mississippi College 2, Spring Hill 0
Much like game one, the Lady Choctaws scored in the first to take the lead, this time thanks to a two-out double, a wild pitch, and an RBI single.
Hannah Fillmore led off the second with a walk, and
Cassidy Mehr singled back to the circle with two out in the inning. However, a strikeout would end the threat. That would be one of the two innings in which the Badgers would leave two runners on base.
In the fourth, MC used an attempted double steal to push a second run across, with the runner moving from first thrown out at second by Mehr.
In the sixth, the Badgers (16-18) put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out.
Delaney Thomas doubled to right, then Fillmore singled to left, moving up to second on the throw back to the infield to keep Delaney from scoring. Unfortunately for the Badgers, a strike out and a foul out would end the threat. SHC would go in order in the seventh, and Mississippi College (28-10) held on for the win.
Baylie Doiron (2-8) took the loss, allowing a run on three hits in three innings.
Julia Waters worked three innings of relief, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts.
The Badgers will be back in SIAC action this weekend when Miles College visits Murray Field. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon, with a single game to follow Sunday.
