Spring Hill's softball team earned a pair of big SIAC West Division wins with a doubleheader sweep of Miles College by matching 4-1 scores Tuesday afternoon at Murray Field.
The wins move Spring Hill back to .500 overall at 18-18, with a 10-2 mark in SIAC play. SHC will have a chance to sweep the SIAC series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Spring Hill 4, Miles 1
Miles opened up the game with a run in the first, but SHC would answer back with two in both the second and third innings to earn the victory.
After Miles manufactured a run with a single, a stolen base, and another single in the first, SHC scored a pair with two out in to take the lead for good in the second.
Daniella Amador started the scoring with a single to center to score
Aly Fowler. After a single and a walk loaded the bases,
Carmen Byrd was plunked by a pitch, forcing across another run to make it 2-1.
In the third, two more runs would cross the plate for the Badgers, with the runs again scoring with two out in the inning. Amador reached on an error with two on to load the bases for
Kaycie Saxton. Saxton would come through with a single to left, plating pinch runner
Lanae Davis and
Carlisle Jamison to make it 4-1.
That would be enough run support for sophomore hurler
Hannah Brenton. The Mobile native went the distance, allowing just the two first inning hits while striking out four to improve to 8-5 on the season.
Game 2: Spring Hill 4, Miles 1
A three-RBI performance by
Hannah Fillmore helped Spring Hill to a second consecutive 4-1 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.
Fillmore started her game two offensive performance with an RBI single to left in the first that scored
Elise Caruso to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Miles (6-29, 4-8 SIAC West) would answer back with a run an inning later to knot the score.
The Badgers would load the bases in the second, but couldn't push across a run. In the fourth, however, the Badgers would take the lead back. Davis, pinch running for Mehr, came across the plate on a passed ball to make it 2-1. Miles would get out of a jam in the inning with a double play to keep the Badgers off the board for the rest of the frame, but the lead was back with the home side.
Fillmore would then put the game out of reach in the fifth. After
Delaney Thomas opened the inning with a double, Fillmore yanked a two-run home run out to left to give the Badgers a 4-1 advantage. Miles would only muster one base runner over the next two innings as the Badgers picked up another victory on the day.
Morgan Kramer improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory in the circle. The freshman allowed four hits and one run but fanned a season-best seven batters in the win.
