SHC Completes Sweep of Kentucky State

MOBILE, Ala. -- Spring Hill College celebrated Senior Day and wrapped up the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball slate with a commanding, 8-1, victory over Kentucky State at Murray Field Saturday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep in the process.

Aly Fowler tied her season-high in RBI with three in the victory, with Hannah Fillmore stretching her streak of games with at least one RBI to eight with a pair of runs driven in.

The Badgers (25-18, 17-2 SIAC) scored two unearned runs in the first inning to start on the right path. With two out and Carmen Byrd on third, Fillmore hit a grounder to second. Fillmore would have been out, but the throw was muffed by the first baseman, allowing Byrd to score to give the Badgers the first run of the game. With Fillmore on second, Fowler singled into right center, plating Fillmore to make it 2-0.

Byrd and Fillmore were at the forefront of a three-run third for the Badgers. Byrd reached on a KSU error, then stole second. Delaney Thomas would walk to put two runners on for Fillmore. The redshirt sophomore then connected on a ground rule double, plating Byrd to make it 3-0. RBI ground outs from Fowler and Carlisle Jamison then followed to make it 5-0 for the Badgers.

Kentucky State (18-21, 8-8 SIAC) would get an unearned run in the fourth, but SHC put the game away with three runs in the sixth. With Byrd and Thomas on and two out, Fillmore singled to left, plating Byrd to make it 6-1. An RBI infield single by Fowler would make it 7-1, and Caroline Hart's single down the line in right plated the final run of the contest for the Badgers.

Four different hurlers stepped in the circle for the Badgers. Hannah Brenton started and worked two scoreless innings. Olivia Brown gave up an unearned run in two innings of action, with Morgan Kramer (4-1) working two scoreless innings. Julia Waters worked a scoreless seventh inning to end the game.

The Badgers will wrap up the home slate this Wednesday when long-time rival Auburn University Montgomery visits Murray Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
