Spring Hill College dropped its first two games in SIAC softball action in 2019 Saturday afternoon as the Badgers were swept by Lane College, 2-0 and 5-2, in Jackson, Tenn.
The losses drop SHC to 11-16 overall and 5-2 in the SIAC, while Lane moves to 13-4 and 5-2 in SIAC action.
Game One: Lane 2, Spring Hill 0
Runs were at a premium in game one, with Lane taking a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second after a hit batter and an RBI double down the line in right. Spring Hill would get a runner in scoring position in the second, fifth, and sixth innings, but each time runners would be stranded at second to end the frame.
Eventually, an RBI ground out would lead to Lane's second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Badgers would go in order in the seventh, and Lane would pick up the victory.
Carmen Byrd and
Carlisle Jamison each had hits for Spring Hill in the loss.
Hannah Brenton took the loss in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Â
Game Two: Lane 5, Spring Hill 2
A first inning two-run home run by Britt Ensley put Lane on its way to a victory in the second game of the twin bill. Lane scored twice in the first, then picked up an unearned run in the second and a pair of runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Spring Hill had seven hits in the contest, out-hitting the home side 7-6, but it wasn't until the seventh when the Badgers would dent the scoreboard. With a runner on, Byrd would reach on a single to the circle to put two runners on. A walk to
Elise Caruso loaded the bases, then
Delaney Thomas drew a walk to force home the first run of the doubleheader for the Badgers. One batter later, Hannah Filmore singled to left center to plate Thomas and make it 5-2 with just one out.Â
Unfortunately for the Badgers, that is as close as they would get. After a pop out, a fly out to center ended the contest with the bases loaded, as Lane held on for the sweep.
Baylie Doiron allowed four earned runs in 2.1 innings in taking the loss, while
Olivia Brown allowed a hit and a walk with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
Spring Hill will look to bounce back Sunday against Lane, with first pitch set for noon.
