Delaney Thomas drove in a pair of runs in each game for the Badgers as Spring Hill's softball team got back on track Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Montevallo at Murray Field, 7-5 and 4-3.
The wins improve Spring Hill to 13-16 on the year and bring an end to a five-game losing streak. Montevallo drops to 17-18 with the losses.
Game One: Spring Hill 7, Montevallo 5
The Badgers used a four-run fourth inning to pull away for the 7-5 win over the Falcons.
Hannah Brenton picked up the win in the circle, allowing four earned runs in going the distance for the win.
The first three batters of the game reached for SHC to push the first run across in the contest.
Elise Caruso doubled to start the game, then an infield hit by
Carmen Byrd put runners on the corners. A single to left by Thomas would send Caruso home and give the Badgers the early lead.
Montevallo scored twice in the second, but SHC answered back with a pair to regain the lead. Byrd would provide the big hit, as her single back up the middle scored Caruso and
Cassidy Mehr to give SHC the 3-2 lead.
The score remained the same until the fourth, when the Badgers stretched the lead out to five.
Kaycie Saxton singled to start the inning, then moved up on Byrd's one-out infield hit. Thomas would come through with her second RBI single of the day, this time scoring Saxton to make it 4-2.
Hannah Fillmore then punched a double into the gap in left-center to bring home Byrd and Thomas to make it 6-2. Later in the inning,
Carlisle Jamison reached on a two-out throwing error, allowing Fillmore to score the final run of the frame for SHC.
Montevallo would threaten, coming back with two in the fifth and a run in the seventh. However, with the tying run on base, a line drive double play sparked by a Jamison catch in right ended the contest in favor of the Badgers.
Game Two: Spring Hill 4, Montevallo 3
Back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth by Byrd and Thomas allowed Spring Hill defeat Montevallo in the finale, 4-3. Freshman
Morgan Kramer earned her second win of the season by going the distance in the circle for the Badgers and allowing three runs on eight hits.
The Falcons took the early lead in game two, scoring a single run in the top of the first. The Badgers bounced back to tie in the second, as
Cassidy Mehr singled to right to plate
Tiffany Fairchild. The lead would swing over to the home side in the third as Thomas cracked a solo home run to center to give her side the lead.
Montevallo loaded the bases in the fifth, but only one run crossed the plate as the Falcons tied the score. With the score tied entering the sixth, Mehr singled, then Saxton reached safely as her sacrifice bunt was thrown wildly to first and down the line in right, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. An infield hit by Byrd plated pinch runner
Brittany Hartung to put SHC ahead, then Thomas' single provided an important insurance run with Saxton coming home to score.
In the seventh, the Badgers would have to hang on for dear life, but the rally attempt by the Falcons came up just short. With two out, a single plated a run for the Falcons and put runners on first and second. A walk would load the bases one batter later, but Kramer would get a fly out to deep center to end the game and give the Badgers the victory.
Spring Hill returns to SIAC action this weekend as Tuskegee University visits for a three-game set. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start, with first pitch Sunday scheduled for 1 p.m. as well.
