GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Spring Hill College Sandy Badgers wrapped up play in the March to May Tournament Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Austin Peay at The Hangout at Gulf Shores.
Spring Hill (10-2) concluded the tournament with a 3-2 mark and Sandy Badgers head coach
Shawn Taylor was pleased with how his team closed out the weekend.
"It was good to finish the weekend with a win versus Austin Peay," said Taylor. "Kassandra (Fairly) and Gid (
Payton Gidney) put together an incredibly solid weekend and again were the first to get a win for us today. I feel like that is a pair that is beginning to figure some things out and are working well together. (Emily) Greim and (Sarah) Senft quickly followed by getting our second win of the match. That's another pair that has been growing more consistent for us."
Fairly and Gidney teamed for a 21-15, 21-10 victory over Ginny Gerig and Cori Theiss in the No. 1 match and Senft and Greim rolled past Caroline Waite and Chloe Stitt, 21-16, 21-7 at No. 4 for the Sandy Badgers.
Taylor adjusted his lineup slightly for the tournament finale, inserting
Cassidi Sterrett into the No. 5 pairing with
Emily Sullivan and the pair knocked off Lucy Randall and Karli Graham, 21-9, 22-20.
"I made a switch at pair 5, replacing Emmarose (Neibert) with Cassidi," said Taylor. "Cassidi has been doing a nice job for us and I wanted to work her into the lineup. Cass and Sully were able to squeak out the second set to clinch the team victory for us. The final match of the day for us came down to Taylor (Hurst) and Britt (
Brittany Bilotti) at the No. 2's. After struggling a bit with passing in the second set, they were able to get back to basics and dial in the passing. It made the offense flow a lot smoother and we were able to add a point with their third set victory."
Bilotti and Hurst held off Ciera Koons and Brooke Moore, 21-14, 11-21, 15-8 for the other Spring Hill victory at the No. 2 slot.
Austin Peay's lone victory came at No. 3, where Haley Turner and Jenna Panning got by
Caroline Herrera and
Allison Weimer, 21-16, 21-19.
Spring Hill is now off until March 19, when the Sandy Badgers return home to the Jim and Betty Walsh Beach Volleyball Facility to take on Principia College and William Carey University at 1 and 6 p.m., respectively. The William Carey match will serve as Senior Night for the Sandy Badgers.
