Badger Softball Goes 1-3 at AUM Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Spring Hill College completed its trip to the Auburn University at Montgomery Softball Invitational on Saturday with a 1-3 weekend record.

The Badgers split the first day of action Friday, Feb. 8 against a pair of teams from Georgia, beating Brewton-Parker College, 10-2, but falling to Georgia Southwestern, 13-5. Day two saw a close loss to Montreat College, 7-6, before being shut out by host AUM, 10-0, in five innings.


Spring Hill 10, Brewton Parker 2

Hannah Brenton pitched the complete game, allowing only one earned run and striking out seven for her second win of the season. Spring Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Delaney Thomas RBI single, but Brewton-Parker tied it in the top of the second with an RBI double from Taylor Morris. A throwing error in the third plated the go-ahead run for Brewton Parker, but the Badger defense turned a double play and then Benton got a pop up to second to end the inning.

Carmen Byrd led off the third with a triple down the leftfield line to spark a four-run inning. Byrd scored on a Thomas sac fly, Caroline Hart doubled in a run and two runs scored on errors in the inning.

Benton struck out five of the next 10 batters faced to hold the Barons at bay, while Spring Hill went on to add three runs in the fourth and two in the six on double by Aly Fowler to enact the eight-run mercy rule in the sixth inning. Fowler finished with three RBI on the day, while Thomas led all players with three hits. Byrd, Elise Caruso and Hannah Fillmore each had two hits.


Georgia Southwestern 13, Spring Hill 5

Randa Day doubled in two runs to give Spring Hill a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Kayla Kerr tied in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run to left. The home sparked an eight-run second inning. Spring Hill was unable to bounce back. Cassidy Mehr singled in a run in the third for the Badgers and Delaney Thomas added a two-run home run in the fourth. GSW added two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth on solo home runs by Hayley Tierce and Aimee Oglesby to end the game an inning early.

Baylie Doiron (0-3) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven earned runs off three this and three walks.


Montreat College 7, Spring Hill 6

Caroline Hart hit a three-run, bases-loaded double to give Spring Hill a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning Saturday morning, but Montreat responded with four runs in the second inning to take the lead, 4-3. The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the third and one in the fifth on a Graclyn Green solo home run to go up, 7-3. Green doubled and tripled on the day and was a single shy of the cycle.

Spring Hill rallied in the sixth. Aly Fowler doubled to start the inning and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Tiffany Fairchild, followed by a Carmen Byrd RBI single. Fairchild later scored on a dropped fly ball to pull within a run, 7-6. Thomas flew out to center to end the inning.

The Badgers loaded the bases In the seventh with a Hannah Brenton walk, Fowler single and error on a sacrifice bunt by Hart. However, Montreat was able to get the force at the plate on two straight fielder's choices before getting Mehr to foul out to the catcher to end the game.

Fowler led Spring hill with three hits and Byrd had two. Elise Caruso, Delaney Thomas, Hart and Fairchild each had one.

Brenton (2-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on six walks and nine hits. She struck out five.


Auburn Montgomery 10, Spring Hill 0

AUM (9-0) posted its fifth shutout of the season after putting up six runs in the second inning to break the game open. AUM took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, 9-0 after two and added its final run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Cassidy Mehr and Kaycie Saxton had Spring Hill's only two hits.

Olivia Brown recorded the loss after allowing seven runs off six this and two walks in the first and second innings.

Up Next: Spring Hill College will travel to the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
