Mobile, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team squared off against GSC rival Union University on Sunday afternoon and came away with a well-earned 2-0 GSC win.
In what was a fairly even contest throughout, it was the Badgers who capitalized on their chances to win the contest. The Badger offense struck first in the 16
th minute when
Sidney Spivey found Olivia Durrough open inside the box and Durrough delivered past the Bulldog keeper. Things would remain even from there through the remainder of the half with both teams exercising their teams' depth in the hot humid conditions.
Both teams had chances in the second stanza but the home standing Badgers seemed to mostly have the better of play. The Badgers finally put the game away in the 79
th minute when
Johanna Meister drove a shot into the top of the near post from 30 yards out. The Badger defense would seal the win with stellar clock management during the remaining 10 minutes.
Spring Hill outshot Union 14-12 in the match and took 3 corners while giving up none. Keeper
Grace Riley faced 12 shots and made 6 saves to preserve the shutout and earn her first collegiate win in goal.
"I am extremely proud of our team for executing the game plan today in the heat," said Head Coach
Allison Whitworth. "
Meggie van den Oever and
Johanna Meister were the players of the game as chosen by the team. Libby scored a great game winner to start us off and make Union have to chase us. I am pleased they got the rewards of their work as we look forward now to next weekend."
The Badgers (1-4, 1-1 GSC) will return to GSC action when they travel to Georgia to take on Valdosta State University on Friday, September 21
st at 7:00 PM and then the University of West Georgia on Sunday, September 23
rd at 1:00 PM. All games are Eastern Time.
