Badgers Advance Past Albany State

Valdosta, GA The Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team continued play at the Valdosta State University Fall Classic with a 3-0 non-conference win against fellow SIAC member Albany State University on Friday evening. The Badgers downed the Golden Rams by scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-18.

Spring Hill wasted little time asserting itself as the better team in the match. The Badgers jumped out to a quick start in set number one to set the tone for the night. The Badgers continued to cruise in sets two and three while spreading playing time around the lineup. Offensively Spring Hill spread the ball around and got multiple hitters into the action at the net.

The Badgers hit a robust .269 attack percentage while holding Albany State to only a .010 attack percentage. Offensively the Badgers were again led by freshman Kassandra Fairly with 10 kills and junior Payton Gidney with 8 kills while four other Badgers had at least 5 kills in the match. Junior setter Emmarose Neibert dished out 28 assists for the Badger front line attack.

The Badger front line dominated action at the nets sending 10 Golden Ram attacks to the floor led by sophomore Allison Weimer with 3 blocks. Spring Hill's blocking scheme flustered Albany State for most of the night and forced the Golden Rams into 25 errors. Along the back row, junior Cassidy Sterrett continued to thwart opponent's attacks by digging 24 shots from Albany State while junior Payton Gidney came up with 11 to help the Badger cause.

"We were able to utilize different line-ups which allowed us to get some people a needed rest after the previous long 5 set match," said Head Coach Peggy Martin. "Our depth at each position is good and we were able to be consistent even with the different line-ups. We need to continue to work on being even more consistent to reach our highest playing level."

The Badgers (3-0, 0-0 SIAC) will continue play in Valdosta, GA on Saturday when the Badgers will face the University of South Carolina Aiken at 9:30 a.m. to close out the weekend.
