New Orleans, LA. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team opened its NCAA Division II regular season era with a 3-0 victory over Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) on Tuesday night. The Badgers claimed the victory by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-10.
The Badger offensive attack was led by sophomore outside hitter
Allison Weimer, freshman middle hitter
Kassandra Fairly, and junior outside hitter
Payton Gidney who hammered out 12, 10, and 8 kills respectively. As a team, the Badgers produced a solid .312 attack percentage keyed by the solid setting performance of junior
Emmarose Neibert who dished out 36 assists.
Defensively, the Badgers were solid as they played good team defense. The front line only tallied 4 total blocks on the night but the team came up with 64 digs. Junior libero Cassidy Sterrett led the way with 24 digs while Gidney contributed 11. Four other Badgers had at least 5 digs in the match.
"After a very inconsistent first set I thought we put it together in all phases of the game" said Head Coach
Peggy Martin. "Our serving needs to get better going forward.
Emmarose Neibert did a good job of running a quicker paced offense tonight and outside hitters
Allison Weimer and
Payton Gidney benefited from that.
Kassandra Fairly continues to impress in her first year at collegiate level."
The Badgers (1-0, 0-0 SIAC) will travel to Valdosta, GA for the Valdosta State University Fall Classic this weekend. Spring Hill will take on host Valdosta State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. (EST) and fellow SIAC member Albany State University at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday the Badgers will face the University of South Carolina Aiken at 9:30 a.m. to close out the weekend.
