MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team earned a 14-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory over the Claflin University (CU) Panthers at historic Stan Galle Field on Friday night.
Panthers (15-28, 11-5 SIAC East) held a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 4
th inning, but the Badgers would wrest away a 6-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame when catcher
Brennan Fontenot drove a two-run triple to deep center field and later scored off a single through the left side by shortstop
John Sklopan.
The Badgers then blew the game open with a seven-run 5
th inning as starter
Zach Paulene (6-2) went eight innings with 10 hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Lucas Kunkel finished the 9
th inning for Spring Hill, allowing one hit and a walk.
At the plate, left fielder
Luke Wall went 3-for-5 while Fontenot and third baseman
Maverick Latour each had two hits for SHC. Catcher
Neil Ring had one hit and collected three RBIs.
Claflin starter Dillon Parker (5-4) lasted 4.0 innings with nine hits, five walks and three strikeouts. Panther second baseman Johnathan Parnell was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs while right fielder Darrell Langston and left fielder Craig Hopkins had two hits apiece.
The Badgers (25-17, 16-1 SIAC West) will close out the 2018 season with a home SIAC doubleheader on Saturday at noon on historic Stan Galle Field. Between games, the Badgers will honor their Senior Class teammates with the annual Senior Day ceremony.
