MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team swept a non-conference home doubleheader away from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 20-4 and 10-9 at historic Stan Galle Field.
In the opening game, the Badgers wasted no time in jumping out to a 3-0 lead on UAH starter Harper Case (1-1) and then exploded for eight runs off Case and reliever Tristan McAnally in the 3
rd inning. By the end of the contest, SHC had racked up 17 hits and nine walks off four Charger pitchers. Badger leftfielder
Luke Wall had three hits with three RBIs, shortstop
Daniel Rodriguez smacked three hits with two doubles and two RBIs, centerfielder
Justin Collier had three hits and three RBIs including a solo home run in the 4
th inning, and third baseman
Maverick Latour collected two hits and three RBIs with a double.
Grant Schroeder (1-1) picked up the win in four innings with four hits, two walks and a strikeout while
Rob Ewald earned his third save of the season in three innings with four hits and a walk.
After the Badgers put a pair of runs on the board in both the 1
st and 2
nd innings of the second game, the Chargers (14-10) rallied back to tie the game at 4-4 in the 3
rd frame off two two-run home runs by designated hitter AJ Walden and right fielder Nolan Ramsey. UAH then went up 6-4 in the 4
th inning, but SHC regrouped to push across two three-run innings in the 4
th and 5
th stanzas to go ahead 10-6. The Chargers would rally to put three runs on the board and the tying run at 2
nd base with one out in the 6
th inning before Badger closer
AJ Fell stopped the bleeding with a pop up to left and a groundout to shortstop off Fell's foot.
Fell would end the game in the 7
th inning for his first save of the year with two fly balls to right and a deep fly ball to the wall in centerfield by Walden that Collier would get under for the final out.
SHC reliever
Steven Saucier (1-0) took home the win in 1.2 innings with one hit, two walks and a strikeout while Fell earned the save to two full innings, allowing just one hit. Tyler Self of UAH (2-1) was saddled with the loss in relief giving up two hits and two hit batters in 2.1 innings of work.
Wall had three more hits with an RBI in the nightcap while catcher
Brennan Fontenot had three RBIs off two sacrifice flies and a single. Right fielder
Grayson Williams had three hits with his sixth double of the year and an RBI.
The Badgers (9-13, 3-0 SIAC West) will travel to Memphis, Tenn., this weekend to challenge Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foes the LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) Magicians (0-7, 0-3 SIAC West) to a three-game series at Bellevue/Turner Field beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
