MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team suffered a 12-1 non-conference loss to the University of Montevallo (UM) Falcons at Kermit A. Johnson Field on Wednesday evening.
The Falcons (15-8) and the Badgers were scoreless through 2½ innings, but UM would put a run on the board in the bottom of the 3
rd inning when catcher Mark Castellucci put a bases-loaded single into left field with two outs. SHC answered with a run in the top of the 4
th inning as Badger center fielder
Luke Wall laced a two-out single over the mound and past second base to bring in left fielder
Chet Silveria from 3
rd base.
Left fielder Caleb Ledbetter of the Falcons put a two-run home run out of straight-away center to stake UM to a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the 4
th inning. First baseman Sebastian Samuels crushed a solo shot out of left field later in the frame as the UM lead grew to 4-1.
UM third baseman Collin Dupree sent a two-run double into left-center in the 5
th inning to make it a 6-1 Falcon bulge.
Will Shaw (1-1) took the loss in 1.1 innings of relief of Badger starter
Grant Schroeder, who went three innings with four hits, four walks and a strikeout. Shaw allowed five hits with a walk and one strikeout. Justin Whitley (2-2) was the winner for the Falcons in five innings of work with eight hits, a walk and eight strikeouts.
The Badgers (4-13) will now travel to Atlanta, Ga., to open the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) portion of their schedule with a doubleheader at the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Panthers (7-9) on Saturday at Bill Evans Field with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. (east).
