MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team split results in a non-conference doubleheader versus the University of Montevallo (UM) Falcons on Wednesday afternoon at historic Stan Galle Field by falling 7-5 in the opening game before bouncing back to win the nightcap in an 8-1 verdict.
The Falcons (5-3) rallied to score four runs in the top of the 7
th inning to steal a 7-5 decision in the first game as UM right fielder John Michael Reed drove in the winning runs with a two-run single up the middle of the infield after Collin Dupree had tied the game with a run-scoring double to left-centerfield.
SHC reliever
Zach Paulene fell to 1-1 on the year, allowing four runs off four hits and a walk with one strikeout. Starter
Luke Dykes lasted five innings with six hits allowed, a walk and four strikeouts.
At the plate, Badger catcher
Brennan Fontenot had two hits with a double and two RBI while third baseman
Maverick Latour and centerfielder
Justin Collier each recorded two hits for the home team. Latour put a double over the third base bag to lead off the 6
th inning and later scored off Collier's single to right with one out. First baseman
Chase Crump put the Badgers on the board in the 1
st inning with a double to deep right-center that brought in shortstop
Daniel Rodriguez who had reached on a leadoff single through the left side.
Kale Latorre (1-0) of the Falcons earned the win in an inning of relief with three hits, two walks and no strikeouts while Drew Mullinax earned his first save of the year in a complete inning of work with one strikeout. Reed enjoyed a 3-for-3 game with two RBI and a walk.
In the second contest, Spring Hill used six pitchers with
Will Shaw (1-0) picking up the win in one inning of relief work that included no hits, two walks and a strikeout. Montevallo used five pitchers with starter Justin Whitley (1-1) taking the loss in 2.2 innings with one hit, four walks and five strikeouts.
SHC batters collected just three hits, but walked nine times and were aided by three UM fielding errors. Rodriguez slapped a two-run double in the 5
th frame after right fielder
Grayson Williams poked a two-run single past the shortstop earlier in the inning.
The Badgers (2-4) next face the Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) Sailfish (4-4) at Jim Spooner Field in Pensacola, Fla., on Friday beginning at 2 p.m.
