A three-point play by
Jordan McIlwain with 37 seconds remaining in the game put Spring Hill College ahead for good and helped lift the Badgers to an epic 111-105 win over Auburn-Montgomery in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The 111 points scored by the Badgers (4-4) is their most points scored in a game since Spring Hill also put up 111 in a 111-75 victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) all the way back on Nov. 22, 2005.
The victory - Spring Hill's second straight since going through a three-game losing streak earlier in the season - also avenged a 72-58 setback at the hands of the Warhawks on Nov. 25 in Montgomery.
Spring Hill, which was coming off a win over arch-rival Mobile on Saturday, fell behind by as many as 13 points in the first half on three different occasions, the final time coming on a Carlos Bell layup with 5:54 remaining that made it 43-30 Warhawks.
That was when the Badgers started their rally and Spring Hill closed the half with a 22-9 run to go into the locker room tied at 52. McIlwain had 14 points in the first half and
Gresyn Rogers had 13 of his own to help Spring Hill get back into the game.
In the second half, Auburn-Montgomery overcame a five-point deficit to build a 70-63 lead following a Tre Hansbrough 3-pointer with 13:27 to go. However, the Badgers rallied again and pieced together a 10-3 run to tie the game at 73 on a Rogers 3-pointer with 11:46 still remaining.
Spring Hill surged ahead again and led 88-80 with 7:45 left following a
Justin Allison basket, but again Auburn-Montgomery rallied and re-tied the game at 91 after a layup by Aaron Reddick with 5:28 remaining.
After that, neither team led by more than two points until McIlwain's three-point play finally put Spring Hill ahead for good and the Badgers closed the contest with a 7-1 run.
Both teams were hot most of the night, as Spring Hill made 33 of its 68 shots overall (48.5 percent) - including a smooth 13-for-27 (48.1 percent) from behind the 3-point line - and Auburn-Montgomery sank 41 of its 72 shots (56.9 percent) in the contest.
Spring Hill's Rogers led all scorers with 31 points (including making 7-of-13 from 3-point range) and five rebounds. McIlwain had 25 (on 7-of-10 shooting), five rebounds and five assists,
Brandon Fischer pitched in 21 and seven rebounds and Allison also reached double digits with 11 and three assists for the Badgers.
Hansbrough led AUM (4-6) with 24 points and four assists. Aaron Reddick added 20 points and nine rebounds before fouling out late, Darrion Taylor had 15 points and five assists, Carlos Bell chipped in 15 points and six rebounds and Devorious Brown had 11 points for the Warhawks, who have lost four straight since their win over Spring Hill last month.
Spring Hill - which is in the middle of playing five games in just 12 days - is back in action Saturday, hosting Paine College in the Badgers' Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. Tipoff at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
