Montevallo, AL – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team traveled to Montevallo and came home with a 2-1 win over a spirited Montevallo squad.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its first half chances as the score was knotted at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of action. SHC outshot Montevallo 11-8 during the period and held a 5-3 advantage in corners attempted.
Montevallo struck first when Liam Moore staked the Falcons to a 1-0 lead in the 72
nd minute that looked to have the home team in position to steal a victory. However, the Badgers displayed their trademark tenacity and gained the equalizer when
Diogo Sousa scored an unassisted goal in the 81
st minute to knot things at 1-1. The Badgers then secure the win when
Cyril Giraud punched home the game winner in the 87
th minute off of assists from
Matthew Moreno and
Tilman Schober.
Both teams generated more offensive opportunities in the second half. SHC outshot Montevallo 13-10 in the frame and held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal for the match. Alessandro Erdyli took the victory in goal and made 3 saves against 18 Falcon shots.
"The team fought valiantly tonight in a great competitive atmosphere," said Head Coach
Steve Wieczorek. "In the pregame we said that someone would provide a special moment to win the match and Cyril delivered just that. We are pleased with the result but now we must get ready for Sunday."
The Badgers (6-1, 2-0 GSC) will now travel to Montgomery to take on in-state rival AUM in another GSC match on Sunday.
