MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team took an early 1-0 lead over the visiting Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) on Friday afternoon at Library Field, but the Warhawks would rally in the 2
nd period to earn a 3-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the Badgers.
SHC struck first in the 5
th minute of play when
Madison Camet found the net with a shot off the bottom of the crossbar from 15 yards out after accepting an entry pass from
Lilli Hanks on the right side.
AUM (2-4, 1-2 GSC) tied the game at 1-1 in the 32
nd minute of play when Stella Mazzillo took a right-to-left cross from Ruby Mendez and chipped the ball over SHC keeper
Hannah Shankman from 10 yards out on the right side. The Warhawks then took the lead in the 53
rd minute after Fabiana Alborghetti used a set piece from 30 yards out on the left side to put the ball in play in front of the goal and Stine Svaerke cleaned up the ball from five yards.
Allison Singleterry of AUM iced the game from 15 yards out off an assist from Agnes Edlund in the 84
th minute.
Shankman (1-4) took the loss in-goal for SHC, but made eight saves against 19 shots and eight corner kicks by AUM. For the Warhawks, reserve keeper Felcia Wester picked up the win in relief of starter Morgan Glenn who left in the 37
th minute following a collision with the goalpost. Wester made four saves and Glenn made one stop as the Badgers took a total of nine shots and two corners.
Following the game, SHC head coach
Allison Whitworth praised her team's quick start, but knew the squad still has some growth ahead of it. "We got a great quick goal recognizing that they were a little flat to start the game," she said. "But we didn't hang on to momentum well today. We knew we would need two goals to win the game, but didn't take the shots and chances we had in the first half. Thankfully, we have another game Sunday to work again to keep growing as a team.
Olivia Hall,
Hannah Fogt,
Aiesha Ledda, and
Audrey Butler all had a huge battle this game to deal with some talented forwards. With as many minutes they have played together, we are starting to move more in sync."
The Badgers (1-6, 0-4 GSC) will next travel to play the University of Montevallo Falcons (3-2, 1-2 GSC) in a GSC contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Varsity Field.
