Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team dropped both ends of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) double header to the Miles College (MC) Golden Bears at historic Stan Galle Field on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 3-1 and 5-2.
Â
The Golden Bears (19-18, 11-4 SIAC) rode the arm of Austin Pate (7-1) to a 3-1 victory in the opener as Pate went the distance and scattered seven hits with six walks and three strike outs.
Justin Whitsett (6-4) took the loss in five innings with nine hits, no walks and three strike outs.
Â
Miles did all of its damage to Whitsett in the 2
nd inning where they strung together four singles, a hit batter and a wild pitch to score all three of their runs in the contest. From there, Pate took over and would not allow a run to cross the plate until the 7
th inning when Badger first baseman
Hunter Romero's single to left field brought in catcher
Brennan Fontenot from 3
rd base, but a final grounder to short would end the threat.
Â
Romero, center fielder
Ulysses Fluellen and right fielder
Justin Collier each had two hits in the game while designated hitter Reeves Brashear and third baseman Xavius Burden each had a pair of safeties for Miles.
Â
In the nightcap, Miles scored a run in the 1
st inning and four in the 2
nd frame to put the Badgers in an early 4-0 deficit. Romero punched his third home run of the year out of left-centerfield to lead off the bottom of the 2
nd inning for Spring Hill, but Miles put answered back with a run-scoring single up the middle by center fielder Ryan Bargery in the 4
th inning.
Â
Spring Hill loaded the bases off MC starter William Donahoo in the bottom of the 4
th inning and Fontenot drew an RBI walk before Burden (1-2) moved to the mound to stop the bleeding with an inning-ending fly ball to center field. Burden would finish the final 3.1 innings to earn the win in relief with two hits, no walks and a strike out.
Â
Austin Barrios (3-5) took the loss for SHC in five innings with eight hits, one walk and four strike outs while Badger shortstop
Maverick Latour had two hits.
Â
The Badgers (23-19, 11-4 SIAC) will visit Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss., on Wednesday for an non-conference game versus the Mississippi College Choctaws (16-22) beginning at 4 p.m.
