Baseball opens SIAC play with DH road sweep
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Spring Hill College baseball team opened the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with a double header sweep of the Claflin University Panthers at historic Mirmow Field by the scores of 15-12 and 8-2.

The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead over the Panthers (6-16, 0-2 SIAC) in the top of the 1st inning when third baseman Brandon Harigel drove in a run with a single, but CAU answered back with a one-out solo homer off SHC starter Dylan Kiene (2-1) in the next half inning. Spring Hill then erupted for seven runs in the 2nd inning as Maverick Latour, Conner Harrison and Brennan Fontenot each connected for home runs.

After five innings of play, the Badgers maintained an 11-3 advantage and added two-run home run that Harrison got into the jet stream for a wind-blown dinger to build a 15-3 cushion. The wheels briefly came off the Badger defense in the 6th inning as SHC surrendered nine runs in a frame marred by errors and walks. Freshman Michael Romano came off the bench to stop the bleeding and picked up his fourth save of the year in a final score of 15-12.

In the nightcap, freshman Sean Bretz (2-1) took to the mound and the Badgers immediately gave him a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning and built it out to 3-0 in the 2nd frame highlighted by right fielder Justin Collier's RBI-triple. SHC would extend the lead to 8-2 in the 6th inning off an RBI-single by first baseman Michael Druhan as Hunter DArmond finished off the win for Bretz.

The Badgers (12-11, 2-0 SIAC) will remain in Orangeburg overnight to finish this three-game series with Claflin beginning with a 1 p.m. (east) on Sunday.
