Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Spring Hill College baseball team opened the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with a double header sweep of the Claflin University Panthers at historic Mirmow Field by the scores of 15-12 and 8-2.
The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead over the Panthers (6-16, 0-2 SIAC) in the top of the 1
st inning when third baseman
Brandon Harigel drove in a run with a single, but CAU answered back with a one-out solo homer off SHC starter
Dylan Kiene (2-1) in the next half inning. Spring Hill then erupted for seven runs in the 2
nd inning as
Maverick Latour,
Conner Harrison and
Brennan Fontenot each connected for home runs.
After five innings of play, the Badgers maintained an 11-3 advantage and added two-run home run that Harrison got into the jet stream for a wind-blown dinger to build a 15-3 cushion. The wheels briefly came off the Badger defense in the 6
th inning as SHC surrendered nine runs in a frame marred by errors and walks. Freshman
Michael Romano came off the bench to stop the bleeding and picked up his fourth save of the year in a final score of 15-12.
In the nightcap, freshman
Sean Bretz (2-1) took to the mound and the Badgers immediately gave him a 1-0 lead in the 1
st inning and built it out to 3-0 in the 2
nd frame highlighted by right fielder
Justin Collier's RBI-triple. SHC would extend the lead to 8-2 in the 6
th inning off an RBI-single by first baseman
Michael Druhan as
Hunter DArmond finished off the win for Bretz.
The Badgers (12-11, 2-0 SIAC) will remain in Orangeburg overnight to finish this three-game series with Claflin beginning with a 1 p.m. (east) on Sunday.
