Baseball takes a pair of 5-4 wins from Wolf Pack
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader versus Jesuit rival the Loyola University (La.) Wolf Pack on Wednesday evening at historic Stan Galle Field by rallying in the 9th inning of the first game and then holding on for dear life in the final inning of the second game.

Spring Hill used a two run home run by third baseman Brandon Harigel in the 4th inning of the opening contest to grab a 2-0 lead over the Wolf Pack (6-4) only to see Loyola answer back with a two-out, two-run homer by center fielder Rawlings Elam in the top of the 7th inning. Loyola then put two runs across the plate in the 9th frame when catcher John Hernandez put a two-run single into right field.

The Badgers were down to their last out in the bottom of the 9th inning when back-to-back infield errors by Loyola tied the game at 4-4 and brought freshman second baseman Ben Bolton to the plate with the bases loaded. Bolton jumped on the first pitch and slapped a single up the middle to score the winning run in Conner Harrison from 3rd base.

Michael Romano (1-1) picked up the win in three innings of relief for starter Sean Bretz who allowed just three hits with two walks and nine strike outs. Bolton and Harrison each had a pair of hits in the game.

In the nightcap, the Badgers scored four runs in the 5th inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Wolf Pack and held a 5-1 cushion in the top of the 7th inning, but three hit batters and an infield error by the Badgers suddenly made it a 5-4 game with one out and the bases loaded. The Badgers successfully avoided disaster with a line out to the pitcher and swinging strike out to end the game.

Starter Austin Barrios evened his record at 1-1 on the year while Hunter DArmond picked up first save of the season. Barrios went five innings with six hits allowed, four walks and five strike outs. Shortstop Daniel Rodriguez was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

The Badgers (4-5) will next host the 20th-ranked Florida Tech (FIT) Panthers (6-1) at historic Stan Galle Field in a non-conference game on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
