MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team finished play at the 2017 Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GSC/SIAC) Challenge hosted by LeMoyne-Owen College at Bruce Hall Gymnasium on Saturday night with a 73-70 non-conference victory over the Shorter University Hawks.
Spring Hill led the Hawks (0-2) 36-32 at halftime and Shorter would get no closer as the Badgers built out as much as a 9-point advantage late in the contest.
Junior forward
Brandon Fischer of Buford, Ga., led the Badgers for the second consecutive contest scoring 19 points while junior guard
Dwight Harris pitched in 14 and sophomore
Andrew Dotson contributed 12 points. Sophomore
William Loyd hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Overall, SHC shot a healthy 49.1% (28-57) from the floor and improved their 3-point shooting from 7.7% on Friday to 40% (6-15) on Saturday. The Badgers lost 14 turnovers to six steals by the Hawks, but dominated under the boards in a 43-20 margin.
Shorter shot 46.2% (24-52) overall and 43.5% (10-23) from 3-point distance while limiting their turnovers to eight fumbles versus five steals by the Badgers. TayVaughn Major dropped in 23 points as four Hawks reached double digits in scoring.
The Badgers (1-1) will open their home schedule on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center with a non-conference game versus the Pensacola Christian College Eagles (2-3).
