Lady Statesmen override Badgers, 3-1
CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team underwent a 3-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) road loss to the Delta State University (DSU) Lady Statesmen at Delta Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Statesmen (4-10; 3-8 GSC) broke onto the scoreboard in the 39th minute as Diana Okechukwu hit the net off an assist by Cat Buckley after SHC goalkeeper HP Fluharty (0-8) saved Buckley's original shot, but the ball rebound back to the shooter who found Okechukwu for the goal.

Delta State tacked on a second goal early in the second half when Jasmine McGill scored her fifth of the year with an unassisted effort in the 48th minute.

SHC would not say die, however, and Lilli Hanks made it a 2-1 contest with an assist from Devin Fry in the 84th minute only to have McGill shut the door 30 seconds later off an assist from Taylor Wyatt.

After the contest, SHC head coach Allison Whitworth was proud of the fight her team displayed. "It was a hard fought game that we battled through in the second half and responded well to the demands of the game," she said. "We have to continue to focus on the details to grow in the game. Our captain Aiesha Ledda led the group in the second half rally with senior Madison Camet pushing the pace of the game to get a goal from Lilli and the assist from Devin. It takes the whole team; we need every player on and off the field to be involved to score more goals. Fluharty played a great first half to keep us in the game by stopping several breakaways along with a point blank shot."

Fluharty (0-8) made seven saves against 20 shots and five corner kicks while DSU keeper            Ana Branch (3-5) faced 12 shots and three corners by the Badgers with five saves.

The Badgers (1-12, 0-9 GSC) will host the 14th-ranked Mississippi College Choctaws (9-2-1; 8-2 GSC) in a GSC match at Library Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Before the game, the Badgers will honor their Senior Class teammates with the annual Senior Day ceremony.
