Box Score FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team rallied to send the game into overtime, but the Badgers were forced to accept a 91-87 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) loss to the Miles College Golden Bears in Knox-Windham Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Spring Hill fought out to a 10-7 lead over the Golden Bears (2-14, 2-5 SIAC West) four minutes into the contest and continued to hold a 16-11 advantage at 13:44 in the first half. By the 1:55 mark, Miles had rallied to cut the SHC lead down to 19-17. A 2-point bucket by Carl Garcia gave Miles the lead at 24-23 and Aron Stewart woke up the crowd with a dunk as the Golden Bears pulled ahead 29-23. SHC pulled to within 29-25 at 4:24, but Eric Dansby of Miles made two consecutive 3-pointers to make it a 35-25 margin. The Badgers found a bucket to break the run, but Stewart dunked again at 2:20 to keep Miles up 37-27 as the Bears carried a 39-28 cushion into halftime.
Miles remained hot to open the second half building a 51-39 edge five minutes into the 2
nd half, but the Badgers fought back to close the gap to 54-49 by the 11:54 mark. Freshman
Gresyn Rogers highlighted the rally at 8:38 when he found the net with a layup to give the Badgers back the lead at 57-56 with SHC holding a 59-56 lead at the 7:54 media timeout.
With 4:52 showing guard
Jack Morrissey drained a 3-pointer to put the Badgers ahead 68-62, but Miles answered back to cut the deficit to 68-66 by the final media stoppage at 3:31.
Shawn Moore of the Badgers then converted two free throws and Miles would find a layup for two points to keep it a 2-point game at 70-68. Shaquille Cook of Miles hit a layup to tie the game at 70-70 only to see
William Loyd of SHC convert two free throws to hand the Badgers back a 72-70 lead at 1:56 to play.
After a frantic minute of playing time later, Miles held a 75-74 lead with 55 seconds remaining when
Walter Massey came away with a steal at 34 seconds followed by an SHC timeout with 22.8 ticks left on the scoreboard clock. The Badger suffered a turnover off the inbounds play resulting in a foul on Loyd and a Miles 1-of-2 free throw performance at 6.4 seconds.
Chase Shellman and
Brandon Fischer then executed a beautiful full-court passing combination concluding in a Shellman bucket at .4 seconds to send the game into overtime at 76-76.
Josh Samuels of Miles found the net with two consecutive 3-point shots to stake the Bears to an 85-83 lead at 1:26 left in overtime, but Fischer would convert two free throws to once again knot the score at 85-85. Samuels would answer with two freebies on the other end with 27 seconds remaining and a game-tying layup attempt by Fischer was blocked in a physical play on the SHC side of the court. Miles added two free throws at 14.8 and Massey earned a put-back layup at 4.9 to set the score at 89-87 in favor of the Golden Bears. Samuels made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 90-87, but the Badger full-court inbounds pass attempt connected with the gym's rafters to hand the ball back to the Bears at 4.6 seconds.
The Badgers (4-16, 3-6 SIAC West) continue this road trip with a match in Jackson, Tenn., versus the West Division leading Lane College Dragons (10-8, 7-2 SIAC West) at 3 p.m. in J.F. Lane Gymnasium.
