Late goals spell disaster for Badger ladies in loss to Malone
Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team finished play at the Palm Beach Atlantic Kickoff Classic at the Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus on Saturday with a 2-1 loss versus the Malone University Pioneers as two Pioneer goals in the final eight minutes of play decided the outcome.

SHC took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play Gabrielle Burmaster lifted a shot into the net over the head of the Malone keeper for her second goal of the young season.

The Pioneers (1-1) would then tie the game in the 82nd minute of play when Brianna Smith accepted an assist from Darby Burch and successfully found the goal as her shot came off the hands of SHC freshman goalkeeper Kayla Beaston and trickled over line. The winning goal came in the 85th minute when Malone's Christine Najjar scored her first goal of 2016 with a shot into the top-right corner over a leaping Beaston.

Beaston (0-2) finished the day with seven saves against 15 shots and four corner kicks by Malone while Pioneer keeper Haleigh Seman (1-1) made six saves against 14 shots and three corners by the Badgers.

"Spring Hill Women's Soccer is fighting a battle for our identity as a team," said SHC head coach Allison Whitworth following the game. "We didn't battle hard enough for long enough to put away the game after we went up a goal. On the road, one goal isn't usually enough to get a result. As we grow into a team that fights for each other through the ups and downs of a game, we will get the better end of these types of matches."

The Badgers (0-2) will next host the Florida Southern College Moccasins in a non-conference match on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Library Field.
