Weather forces Badgers, Blazers to accept 1-1 draw
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team and the Valdosta State University (VSU) Blazers were forced to accept a 1-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) draw at Library Field on Sunday afternoon due to lightning in the 72nd minute of play on Sunday afternoon.

The Blazers (0-6-2, 0-3-1 GSC) drew first blood in the 8th minute when Riley Tennant scored off a put-back of a blocked shot by Maggie VanHusan.

In the 22nd minute, the referees sent the teams to the locker rooms as lightning and rain stopped action for one hour and 43 minutes, but when the squads returned to action Spring Hill wasted no time in knotting the score at 1-1 with freshman Sydney DeJohn's first collegiate goal in the 28th minute. DeJohn finished from 15 yards out after accepting a lovely pass across the box by senior Darby Rasch, who increased her career total of assists to 17 putting her just six away from tying the school record of 23 held by Courtney Harlan (2012-14).

The teams agreed to a shortened eight-minute halftime, but a lightning strike within the safety distance forced the referees to declare the match suspended and complete in the 72nd minute.

Badger freshman goalkeeper Kayla Beaston (0-6-2) made four saves versus 14 shots and one corner kick by the Blazers while VSU keeper Alyssa Curtis recorded four saves versus 12 shots and one corner attempt by Spring Hill.

Following the match, SHC head coach Allison Whitworth liked the resiliency she saw from her players. "The team took a slow start and gave up an early goal," she said. "But that really kick-started our fight as a group. I was very happy with how the team responded to the long lightning delay and the work they put in to get a result on a hard Sunday game after traveling Friday. Sydney scored her first college goal and Darby's assist keeps her moving up the career points and assists charts at Spring Hill. We need to continue to have a diverse attack from a variety of players this season."

The Badgers (0-6-2, 0-3-1 GSC) will host the University of North Alabama Lions (3-5, 2-2 GSC) on Wednesday in a conference match beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Library Field.
