No. 16 Tars ooze past Badgers, 5-1
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team suffered a 5-1 nonconference home downturn to the 16th-ranked Rollins College Tars at a soggy Library Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Tars (4-0) opened the scoring in the 19th minute of play when Paxton Sickler put the ball in the net from three yards out following a pass from the endline by Kathryn O'Brien. By the 52nd minute, the score had grown to 3-0 when in the 22nd minute as O'Brien completed a shot from the top of the box that was followed 30 minutes later by a Samantha Collins goal from 15 yards out that deflected off a Badger defender.
Spring Hill broke onto the scoreboard in the 73rd minute as
Madison Camet scored in the top of the goal off a set piece to the left of the keeper's box.
Rollins added a fourth goal just one minute later as Sarah Buckley found pay dirt from the left side off an entry by Lauren McDonald. The fifth and final Tars goal came off the foot of Mora Johnson in the 80th minute via a penalty kick following a Badger foul just inside the penalty zone.
"Playing Friday and Sunday games in women's soccer demands a lot of physical and emotional energy," SHC head coach
Allison Whitworth said following the game. "After all we spent on our double overtime contest on Friday, I am pleased with the resiliency we had to come back and work as hard as we did today against Rollins while fighting injuries. We've played two ranked teams this year in Rollins and Palm Beach Atlantic and we are headed into a strong conference schedule with ranked teams."
Badger freshman goal keeper
Kayla Beaston (0-3-1) made 12 saves against 37 shots and eight corner kicks by the Tars. Kelly Rowswell (4-0) collected one save versus two shots and one corner by the Badgers in the first half while Carly Stevens had no saves versus two shots and no corners by SHC in the second half.
Whitworth says her team is learning quickly as the season progresses. "Rollins had a few dangerous players that we worked to eliminate their impact and forced others to step up," she said. "The details like proper tackling and tracking runners will continue to get sorted out.
Kait Eichorst has been a battering ram and sacrificing to defend the goal. Her leadership and example set the tone for our team defending. Beaston has continued to fight to keep the ball out of her net. Camet got her first goal of the year and needed that push to get her rolling more smoothly. We need to finish our changes especially when we start strong and get in front of goal early in the game. This is a team that is fighting through games like today and will be better each week as they have continued to grow each game."
The Badgers (0-3-1) will open Gulf South Conference play on Friday at 1 p.m. versus the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers (0-3) at 1 p.m. on Library Field.
