SHC fends off Rams with home runs, relief pitching
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning and then fended off a late rally by the University of Mobile Rams to secure an 8-5 non-conference victory on Tuesday evening at historic Stan Galle Field.

The Badgers used a Grand Slam home run off the bat of center fielder Ulysses Fluellen to cap a five-run first inning in which the first six SHC hitters earned base hits off Rams (29-17) starter Garrett Waters (9-3).

Mobile cut the Badger lead to 5-1 with an RBI-single by left fielder J.T. Peddrick in the 4th frame, but the Badgers answered back with a run in the 5th inning as right fielder Michael Druhan blasted a double to left field that brought in third baseman Matthew Spradlin from 2nd base.

Peddrick would tack on a second run for the Rams with a sacrifice fly to right in the 6th inning. Mobile then erupted for three runs in the 7th inning to make it a slim 6-5 Badger advantage off a two-run single by shortstop Payne Palmer with two outs that was followed by an RBI-double to right-center by third baseman Logan Palmer. As Payne Palmer scampered home from 1st base, Fluellen threw a dart from the outfield to 3rd base where Spradlin applied the tag to end the inning and stop the Ram rally in its tracks.

Catcher Alex Jones rebuilt an 8-5 Badger bulge in the next half inning when he crushed his team-leading 12th home run out of left field for two runs, setting the table for SHC reliever Andrew Pierson. Pierson collected his first save of the year in two innings, facing just seven batters with one hit allowed and three strike outs.

Hunter Roig (1-0) earned his first win of the season in three innings of relief giving up four hits and two walks with three strike outs while Austin Barrios had the no-decision start in four innings with five hits, two walks and a strike out.

Mobile used six pitchers on the night as Waters worked two innings with six hits, no walks and two strike outs.

On offense, Spradlin, Jones, Druhan and first baseman William Floros all had two hits as Spring Hill tallied 11 total hits in the contest. Not to be outdone, Mobile had five hitters with a pair of hits as Peddrick and Payne Palmer each collected two RBI.

The Badgers (27-14; 16-2 SIAC) will next host the Albany State University Golden Rams (13-30, 11-4 SIAC) in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game on Friday at 6 p.m. at historic Stan Galle Field.
