Badgers take 2-1 series victory over Shorter to open year
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team earned a 2-1 series victory over the Hawks of Shorter University over the weekend by dropping the opener 11-3, but bouncing back to win the Saturday nightcap 18-8 in eight innings and the Sunday rubber game 3-1.

In the opening contest, Badger starter Johnathan Billings (0-1) went four innings and gave up five hits and four runs with three walks and a strikeout as Matthew Spradlin and William Floros each had two hits. Both of Floros' hits were doubles while Spradlin drove home run out the park in his first at-bat of the year

The second game of the day was a hit parade as the Badgers racked up 19 hits highlighted by junior right fielder Michael Druhan going 6-for-6 with a double and a Grand Slam a nine-run SHC 7th inning. Wesley Parrish started the contest and allowed three hits with three walks and four strikeouts, but reliever Andrew Pierson (1-0) earned the win despite surrendering a game-tying 3-run home run in the top of the 7th inning. Pierson worked two innings that included two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

On Sunday, Christian Bahlinger (1-0) went six innings and allowed just two hits with two walks and five strikeouts and Hunter Nowak collected his first save of the year with 1.2 innings of no-hit effort with a walk and two strikeouts. Spradlin and senior catcher Alex Jones both smacked home runs in the game while Druhan was 2-for 4 with a double.

On the weekend, SHC hitters collected a healthy .327 average with six doubles and seven home runs. Druhan finished with an 8-of-14 (.571) weekend and a staggering 1.143 slugging percentage. Second baseman Garrett Webb had six hits with three RBI and Spradlin scored seven runs off five hits.

The Badgers (2-1) next host the University of Montevallo Falcons (3-3) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game at historic Stan Galle Field.
