Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader versus the University Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers on Wednesday afternoon at historic Stan Galle Field by slugging out a 12-3 victory in the first game before accepting a 9-7 loss in the nightcap.
The Chargers (5-4) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning in Game 1 off a two-run home run by second baseman Michael Fox, but the Badgers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by an RBI single to left by designated hitter
Jacob Malkoff. The flood gates opened for the Spring Hill offense in the 3rd and 4th innings as the Badgers scored four runs in a 4th frame that featured a two-run homer by catcher
Alex Jones and a 5th stanza that saw right fielder
Michael Druhan belt a two-run blast out of left field followed by centerfielder
Ulysses Fluellen belting a solo shot out of right in the very next at-bat.
Jones tacked on a solo shot for his fourth dinger of the year in the 6th inning as
Dylan Kiene (1-1) earned his first win of 2016 with a complete-game, six-hit performance. Kiene allowed three walks with five strike outs while throwing just 82 pitches. Logan Crook (0-2) suffered the loss in three innings with seven hits, two walks and a strike out.
The second game saw UAH take another 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning this time courtesy of a two-run homer to left-center by third baseman Justin Cantrell. Spring Hill rallied to take a 6-3 lead in the 3rd inning off two hits, three walks a hit batter and a UAH infield error, but the Chargers responded with a six-run 4th inning punctuated by a one-out Grand Slam home run to left by first baseman Trey Mathis.
In the 7th inning, SHC put the tying run at the plate after catcher
Brennan Fontenot brought in a run with a single to right-center, but Chris Kilpatrick of UAH earned his first save of the year with a strike out and a grounder to 2nd base to close the door on the Badger comeback attempt.
Austin Barrios (0-1) took the loss in relief for SHC in 1.1 innings with four hits, two walks and a strike out. Taylor Clemons (1-0) was the winner in relief for UAH in 3.1 innings with just one hit allowed, no walks and six strike outs.
Druhan collected four hits with two RBI on the day while Badger first baseman
William Floros had three hits with four RBI and Jones had three hits with three RBI. For, UAH centerfielder Wright Hackett was 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
The Badgers (5-4) visit the University of Mobile Rams (5-5) on Friday for a non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m. at Mike Jacobs Field.
