Badgers, Hawks battle to 1-1 GSC draw
Box Score ROME, Ga. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 two-overtime Gulf South Conference (GSC) draw versus the Shorter University Hawks at Ben Brady Field on Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half in which both teams took just four shots apiece, the Hawks (1-9-1, 0-5-1 GSC) broke onto the scoreboard in the 72nd minute as Lora Bruce scored her first goal of the year when she accepted an assist from Corrie Thomas and found the net past SHC reserve goalkeeper and redshirt freshman Hannah Shankman.

Spring Hill refused to break, however, and responded four minutes later when freshman Sydney DeJohn took a pass from sophomore Gabrielle Burmaster to knot the match at 1-1 with her second goal of the season.

Just moments after the final whistle of the second overtime sounded, the Badgers pushed a ball across the goal line, but the clock had expired.

Badger freshman goalkeeper Kayla Beaston played the first 45 minutes with two saves versus four shots and one corner kick while Shankman (0-0-1) earned the draw in relief with 65 minutes in goal and one save against 13 shots and seven corner attempts. Shorter's Alden Powell (0-5-1) faced 13 shots and one corner kick by SHC with six saves.

After the match, SHC head coach Allison Whitworth was pleased with the fight that her squad showed throughout the game. "The team battled through a tough Sunday game for a tie while playing a man down," she said. "The game was called very tight and on a small fast field and that made play very disjointed. We came close at the end with that final shot, but that just shows how hard we fought at the end."

The Badgers (0-8-3, 0-5-2 GSC) will visit Montgomery, Ala., on Wednesday to take on the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks (5-5-1) in a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m. at the AUM Soccer Complex.
