Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a wild two-goal rally over the final 25 minutes of play, the Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team suffered a 3-2 non-conference loss to the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks on Wednesday afternoon at the AUM Soccer Complex.
The Warhawks (6-5-1) opened the scoring in the 28
th minute when Amy Glynn hit from just inside the keeper's box following a crossing pass by Ruby Mendez. Chelsie China then tacked on her third goal for season with a volley into the upper left corner to make it a 2-0 contest in the 43
rd minute.
Mendez added her ninth goal of the year off a ball from Glynn that beat the defenders and was put in upper left corner of the goal to expand the lead to 3-0 less than two minutes into the second half.
Spring Hill then began to fight back when
Beryl Newchurch scored her first goal of the year when her shot deflected off a defender and into the goal in the 67
th minute. The SHC rally continued just five minutes later when
Lauren Clement made it 3-2 with a free kick that found the right corner of the goal from 30 yards outside of the box, but AUM would successfully hold off the Badgers over the final 10 minutes of frantic play.
Badger freshman goalkeeper
Kayla Beaston (0-9-2) made four saves against 15 shots and 13 corner kicks by the Warhawks while Morgan Glenn (4-5) of AUM collected five saves versus 12 shots and three corner attempts by SHC.
Despite the loss after a spirited comeback attempt, SHC head coach
Allison Whitworth says her team still has lots of fight left in them. "We have to find a way to play our best for longer portions of the game," she said after the match. "But I am very proud of the tenacity to come back from down three to compete at the end. A multi-goal game is a big step for us."
Whitworth pointed to several players who made a difference in the contest. "
Madison Camet was very good in the midfield," she said. "Newchurch was good in the front line. Our attack was varied and brought multiple players into scoring opportunities.
Francesca Talotta,
Lillian DeSousa and
Becca Roth all had dangerous chances."
The Badgers (0-9-3, 0-5-2 GSC) will visit Pensacola, Fla., on Sunday to take on Gulf South Conference rivals the University of West Florida (UWF) Lady Argos (9-3, 7-0 GSC) in a conference match at 12:30 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Field.
