Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team won its second consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game on Saturday evening with an 85-62 victory over the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
An emotional Badger squad bolted out to a 42-20 lead after the first 20 minutes of play, but the Golden Rams (1-13, 0-6 SIAC East) came out of the locker rooms hot and made three consecutive 3-point buckets to start the second half as the Badgers saw their lead dwindle down to 45-31 with 18 minutes left to play.
The Badgers responded by picking up the pace and pushing the ball up the floor to reestablish a 59-33 bulge just four minutes later. SHC would hold its largest lead of the game at 61-33 with 12:25 on the clock and prevented ASU from getting closer than 77-61 with 3:31 remaining.
"This game is an example of how much we have grown up and matured over the past two months," said SHC head coach
Aaron Niven after the game. "We could have put our heads down when they cut they lead down to 14 points early in the second half, but instead we answered with a run of our own to regain control. I'm just very proud of the maturity we showed tonight."
Redshirt freshman guard
Sawyer Glick dropped 22 points in the buckets off a 9-of-15 (.600) effort from the floor with three 3-pointers. Sophomore forward
Walter Massey came off the bench to record a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. As a team the Badgers shot a strong 51.6% (33-64) from the field with a season-high nine 3-pointers in 20 attempts (.450). SHC suffered a manageable 13 turnovers against eight Ram steals and took away 14 turnovers with seven steals.
Jordan Floyd scored 15 points for Albany State as the Rams shot 40.7% (24-59) overall and 39.1% (9-23) in 3-point attempts.
SHC controlled the boards 48 to 25 in rebounding and outscored the Rams 32-20 in the paint and 20-12 in second chance points. The Badger bench bested the ASU reserves 44-20.
The Badgers (4-8, 3-2 SIAC West) will open a two-week road swing on Thursday when they travel to Columbia, S.C., to face the Benedict College Tigers (9-6, 4-2 SIAC East) in a conference match at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern) in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
