Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team scored a season-low in a 58-42 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road loss to the Claflin University Lady Panthers in Tullis Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers (11-7, 6-2 SIAC East) took a quick 3-0 lead off a 3-pointer by Carnique Marks just 52 seconds into the game, but Badger junior forward
Camry Johnson made it a 3-2 contest with a bucket in the paint one minute later. SHC took its first lead of the game at 4-3 when junior center
Leah Washington was good on a layup at 7:03 of the first period.
Senior guard
Natalie Harper drained a 3-pointer at the 1st period buzzer to knot the game at 9-9 after 10 minutes of play and bring her within just two buckets of tying the SHC all-time career record for successful treys.
In the second period,
Amee Smith of SHC tied the game at 14-14 coming out of the media timeout at 4:59 with a "hoop-and-the-harm" 3-point play, but Claflin responded with 11 unanswered points to build out a 25-14 bulge with less than a minute left in the half.
The Lady Panthers controlled a 38-28 advantage by the end of the 3rd period and held as much as a 53-32 margin with 3:22 left to play.
Claflin held Spring Hill to 25.8% (16-62) overall shooting and 21.7% (5-23) from outside as the Badgers turned the ball over 14 times against seven steals by the Lady Panthers. Washington scored 12 points and Johnson hauled in 11 of the 39 Badger rebounds. On the other end of the court, the home team drained 38.6% (22-57) of their shots including 28.6% (2-7) from 3-point range while suffering 10 turnovers to 10 SHC steals. Jaquanna Davis of the Panthers recorded a double-double effort for the day with 16 points and 10 rebounds as Claflin roped 50 total rebounds.,
Spring Hill's previous low output of points came against West Florida in a 57-44 non-conference home loss on November 24.
The Badgers (5-11, 3-4 SIAC West) next visit Atlanta, Ga., to face the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers (5-10, 3-2 SIAC East) in a conference match at 6 p.m. (Eastern) in Epps Gymnasium on Monday.
