Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team finished a two-game road trip through western Tennessee on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) downturn versus the Union University Bulldogs at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs (4-4, 2-0 GSC) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when Diogo Dias connected on a header that found the right side of the goal off an assist by Lucas Lopes.
In the second half, Union pushed its advantage out to 3-0 when in the 67th minute Andre Silva scored off a shot into the top right corner and in the 77th minute David Marin put the ball in the bottom right corner of the net with an assist from Kyle Yeoman.
"Union was just up for the fight tonight," said SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek after the game. "We have several young players and college soccer is unlike anything they have experienced before. Tonight they learned that every game is a scrape. Every game is a challenge.
"Hopefully we learn from moments like these," Wieczorek continued. "We are learning something new with every match and tonight we learned that we have to be ready to play going into every game. If we keep learning then we will be pretty good moving forward."
Junior goalkeeper
Will Carpenter (2-5) of Spanish Fort, Ala., collected eight saves for the Badgers versus a barrage of 21 shots and four corner kicks by the Bulldogs.
On the other end of the field, Union keeper Matt Kesler made four saves versus nine shots and two corner attempts by the Badgers.
The Badgers (2-5, 0-2 GSC) will next welcome the Shorter University Hawks (2-4-1, 0-0 GSC) to Library Field for a conference contest on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Since 2006, Spring Hill is 1-4-1 versus the Hawks, including a 3-0 defeat in Rome, Ga., last season.
